Biotechnology

Washington State has 190 companies dedicated to biotechnology.

 37% pursue the research and development of therapeutic products,

 27% focus on diagnostics,

 21% on contract manufacturing and genetic testing,

 9% on plant, agriculture and animal research, and

 4% on natural resources.

Since 1995, local companies have attracted more than $400 million in venture capital investment and produced more than $500 million in research partnerships with biotech and pharmaceutical companies.

Despite Washington’s history as a commodity producer of primary wood products, the secondary forest products market is flourishing in the Pacific Northwest. This is evidenced by a rapid growth in secondary processed forest products exports in recent years. Washington natural advantages are derived from its 7 deep draft ports and 12 total marine cargo terminals including Seattle, Tacoma, Bellingham, Everett, Olympia, Port Angeles, Grays Harbor, Anacortes, Longview, Kalama, Vancouver, and Pasco.

Commercial Fishing: Washington is the North Pacific’s homeport for the commercial fishing industry. Aquaculture: The Washington aquaculture industry's diverse, state of the art facilities house a substantial seafood farming industry.
